The main belt asteroid (133243) Essen, was discovered on September 2, 2003 by the Walter-Hohmann-Sternwarte in Essen, Germany. The asteroid got the preliminary name 2003 RT1 after notice was given to the Minor Planet Center. More observatories observed the asteroid the following year and the trajectory of 2003 RT1 could be determined. The name Essen was chosen by the Walter-Hohmann Observatory in honor of the city it is located in.

Essen, in the German agglomeration „Ruhrgebiet“, is the former center of German heavy industry. It has emerged as a modern city with various scientificand cultural activities. Essen is the location of the observatory where this minor planet was discovered.(Essen, im deutschen Ballungsraum „Ruhrgebiet“ gelegen, ist das frühere Zentrum der Deutschen Schwerindustrie. Es hat sich zu einer modernen Stadt mit verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen und kulturellen Aktivitäten entwickelt. Essen ist der Standort der Sternwarte, an der dieser Kleinplanet entdeckt wurde.
